Mountain Dew skateboarder, Paul Rodriguez and Dan Pendleton inspired 35 skate shops across the country to partner with an artist and design a can for Mountain Dew. Concepts skate shop in Cambridge, MA was chosen as one of five skate shops in the Northeast.

As we get set to post yet another Skully video (this time making fun of Pilot c0-creator, Billy Concannon) we thought we’d take a second to give you an inside look at how we make these simple videos. First, Pilot illustrator Greg Titus sculpted our hero Skully out of a block of clay….

Then we take a still photo of him and hand it over to graphic designer Matt Arnold. With his mad photoshop skills, he gives the still clay photo more of a “bone look”

Next media schmoe, me (Dennis Carroll) will take 10-15 minutes and write a script then do the voice over. Then I’ll animate the facial and body movements using a series of programs including Adobe After Effects and Premier Pro. Depending on the script, I may jump on google images and grab a couple props, characters, whatever. Sometimes Skully seeks the assistance of one of his henchmen, the deadly Pilot Logo Attack Ninja’s. These guys are just the Pilot logo and we do a page curl effect on the corners. Sometimes we add a mouth for more expressiveness.

Today marks the beginning of a new segment here at Pilot where we allow you, our devoted fan….um….fans, to be heard. We call it “WeMail”. We take your email and put it on our BLOG. Send us your comments, questions, drawings, ideas, and if they don’t suck, we’ll share it with the world. Thus giving you your 5 minutes of fame. You can now die a happy being.

Hey Pilot!
I’m a designer/inventor from a small town in Ohio. I’ve been at it for 30 years now and I’ve finally come up with something I think could really make an impact on a multi-billion-dollar industry, the pet supply industry. I call it the Kitty Porter 3000 or KP3000. I was hoping i could show you the detailed sketches and hire you to design some really professional looking packaging for it.

Figure 1 shows the basic design of the KP3000. Lightweight carbonfibre material and self-winding screws make it convenient to get your pet in and transport it around in style!

Figure 2 shows the KP3000 in full use. Pets on the go! Also works on small dogs.

We didnt have much choice here with Ken. He’s the only dude to ever email us. But if this was a game show, we’d hear a “wonk, wonk, wonk” and a massive hook would come out of nowhere, impale this email, and drag it screaming off the side of the stage.
